Long-time Civil Rights pioneer and former senior pastor of Paseo Baptist church, Rev. Charles Briscoe, died in the home on Tuesday, Sept. 25, in the home.
Visitation for Rev. Briscoe will be held today at the Macedonia Baptist church, 1700 E. Linwood Blvd., Kansas City, Mo., from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at Palestine Missionary Baptist Church of Jesus Christ, 3619 E. 35th St., in Kansas City, Mo., on Saturday, Sept. 29, beginning at 10 a.m.
Dr. Briscoe, was born June 16, 1931 to Jack and Vivian Briscoe in Kansas City, Mo. He attended school in the Kansas City, Mo., school district graduating from R.T. Coles Vocational High school. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Grace university in Omaha, Nebraska. He did graduate work at Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Kansas; Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the Nazarene Theological Seminary all in Kansas City, Mo. He earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from the Missouri School of Religion in Columbia which also awarded him an honorary Doctorate of Divinity degree.
Pastor Briscoe pastored churches in Brunswick and Moberly, Missouri. He was called to become the pastor of Paseo Baptist church in Kansas City and was installed in May of 1967.
In June, 1951, Pastor Briscoe was united in matrimony with Benola Lee Burton. They had two children, Susan Joy and Donald Joseph. After 42 years of marriage, Benola Briscoe died in 1993.
In June, 1994, he married Georgia Mae Shepard. Their blended family consisted of nine children, 20 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She preceded him in death in 2012.
The next year, Pastor married his present wife Barbara Pope of Dallas, Texas.
