MCALLEN, Texas – As one small group was protesting in Brownsville, another was having a demonstration in McAllen.
They too demanding the reunification of immigrant children forcibly separated from their parents. The group gathered near the federal courthouse. Along with signs and speeches protestors laid out shoes and crosses to represent kids still separated.
Efren Olivares – Texas Civil Rights Project said, “They’re fleeing for their life. They’re bringing them here to protect them. They’re trying to save their lives. And they have a right to do that under International Human Rights Law and morally, they’re fleeing for their lives to protect themselves and their children. If they violate an immigration law, they’d be subjected to the immigration laws and processes but taking their children away, is not provided for in any law in the U.S.”
The Texas Civil Rights Project is one of many groups in the state fighting for the rights of the displaced immigrants.
