ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Civil Rights attorney Ben Crump will represent the girlfriend of the man killed in Clearwater’s “Stand Your Ground” case.
Crump will join Brittany Jacobs at a 10:30 a.m. Thursday press conference at the Pinellas County Criminal Justice Center.
10News will cover and stream the press conference live at wtsp.com.
Jacobs’ boyfriend, Markeis McGlockton, 28, was shot and killed outside the Circle-A food store on July 19 by Michael Drejka over a parking space dispute.
Investigators from the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office decided not to file charges against Drejka, citing the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law. State prosecutors are currently deciding whether to file charges.
The case has gained nationwide attention and strong social media reaction as people have taken sides regarding whether Drejka was in danger when he shot McGlockton.
Crump is known for his work representing families in controversial civil rights cases, including the families of Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown, whose death sparked riots in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014.
Martin’s case runs some parallels with the Clearwater case. George Zimmerman was acquitted in the high-profile 2012 shooting death of Martin through the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law.
