Community leaders from across the state will gather Sunday to pay tribute to lives and legacies of slain civil rights leaders Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore.
The annual memorial program will take place 3 p.m. Sunday at the Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Memorial Park and Museum, 2180 Freedom Avenue in Mims.
The free event, sponsored by the three branches of the Brevard County NAACP and the Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Cultural Complex, will also include a visit to the pair’s gravesite.
The Moores, who worked to register blacks to vote in Florida, were killed by an assassin’s bomb that ripped apart the couple’s Mims home on Dec. 25, 1951. Their deaths came nearly a decade before the start of the civil rights era led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Both are considered martyrs of the civil rights movement.
The graveside visit will take place at LaGrange Cemetery at 1575 Old Dixie Highway in Titusville.
