Akure – The Conference of Nigerian Civil Rights Activists (CNCRA) on Sunday demanded the suspension of Senator Buruji Kashamu from the National Assembly until he clears himself of drug trafficking charges in the United States of America.
The group also urged the federal government to stop the lawmaker representing Ogun East Senatorial District from playing active politics in the country pending the determination of the case.
Ifeanyi Odili, Convener of the group, who spoke at a press briefing in Akure, Ondo state capital, said no political party in the country should accord the senator any relevance.
CNCRA wondered why the Federal Government had failed to oblige the request of the United States of America for the extradition of the senator despite the extradition agreement between the two countries.
It called on the Attorney General of the Federation to explain to Nigerians what was wrong with the extradition suit filed against the senator.
“You will recall that sometimes in 2015, the United State of America declared one Buruji Kashamu, a senator of the federal republic, wanted for drug offences.
“You will also recalled that in response to the allegation between May 23 and 25, 2015, operatives of the NDLEA laid siege to Kashamu’s house in Lekki, Lagos, wanting to arrest him for the purpose of extraditing him to US.
“Kashamu, in his bid to escape arrest, locked himself up in his house. As a distinguished and honorable lawmaker, he ought to honorably surrender himself to the drug officers if not for any other grounds but for integrity sake.
“He declared that, before anybody could succeed to extradite him to US to face trial for drug related offences, about three, four or five people will die. What a disrespectful, insolent and affront on the collective integrity of Nigerians!
“In a statement titled “US court ruling: I have no case to answer”, dated January 28, 2017, Kashamu maintained that he was not the offender wanted in US but his younger brother who is now late.
“Even if his claim is right, it still behooves on him as a Senator of the federal republic to honorably go to the US and have his name cleared,” the group said.
